Soulful Conversations

Have you ever had conversations where you feel such great contentment and satisfaction? We like to call them ‘soulful’ conversations. They are an expression of our soul along with deep feelings and thoughts that reside within. Our soul is inherently built to have social connections, which can be created by having these meaningful conversations.

What happens to us when we have these soulful conversations? We establish better interactions with society, thus increasing our happiness. According to Psychology Today [1], a happy person has about 46% of their day filled with substantial discussions.

What are the key traits of a soulful conversation? Firstly, its fundamental components are trust and compassion. They set the tone to allow one to unravel their deep-seeded thoughts and feelings in a safe environment. Secondly, there is an open mindset and focused attention to listen to what the conversation is truly about. Lastly, these conversations are a way to express ourselves, therefore we want to know that we are heard and validated. From over 30,000 guests on her show, Oprah mentioned that they all had one thing in common: "They all wanted validation" [2].

Keep in mind that these soulful conversations are not only limited to verbal communication with other people. The other types of conversation are when we write through journalling or when we have them in our heads. Our mind can be quite a conversationalist! When we are having any of these types of conversations, we are actually having them with our own soul or universe. The real questions we should consider are the following:

  • When we speak to ourselves, are we speaking with compassion and love?
  • Are we truly attentive and listening to what our soul or universe is trying to say?

Having good soulful conversations with ourself and others takes time and practice. We need to develop the skills of compassion, trust, open mindset and focused attention. Once we have these elements, we will have much more satisfying conversations that will change us for the better.
