Book: Jay Shetty's Think Like A Monk

Anju Sharma - Think Like a Monk

Recently, I have been seeking guidance and clarity for my journey’s purposes. When I discovered Jay Shetty’s podcast, On Purpose, I was drawn by his calm and confident attitude. He has found a way to spread timeless wisdom globally that is relevant and applicable to our daily lives. He is also determined to help everyone reach their full potential and fulfill their purposes.

For those who may not know Jay Shetty, he lived as a monk in India for 3 years. One of his teachers told him that he would have more impact on the world if he left the monk’s path to share his experience and wisdom with others. Since then, Jay has been on a mission to make wisdom go viral through the world of media.

When he announced that he was releasing his book, “Think Like A Monk”, I eagerly pre-ordered it. I felt as though he was physically present with me as I read through his personal rich experiences and ‘aha’ moments. In his book, he explores a path of 3 major stages: Let Go, Grow, and Give. First, he reveals how to overcome roadblocks, such as fears, in our potential. Then, he shares advice on how to grow through building a routine, mastering our minds, and discovering our purpose. Lastly, Jay focuses on the importance of giving through gratitude, relationships and service.

The chapters that I love the most were about purpose/dharma and service. Jay mentioned that “dharma is passion in service of others” and “miracles happen when you embrace your dharma”. Dharma is our responsibility to fulfill it. It will then bring us stability and peace. These are the elements to help identify our dharma: alive, flow, comfort, consistency, positivity and growth. Once we discover our dharma, Jay said that we should strive to play that role in many aspects of our lives, such as hobbies, community work, relationships, etc because we will feel meaning when we are in that role.

In this book, there is a quiz to help us identify our dominant Dharma personality type. When I completed it, I was surprised to find that I am a ‘guide’! This means that I am naturally comfortable with and drawn to learning and sharing knowledge. So, since I have been sharing wisdom on social media, YouTube and podcast the past several months, I guess that I am fulfilling my dharma!

In Jay’s last chapter, he said “The highest purpose is to live in service”. Service is the essence of human consciousness, and only in service can we be happy. Once we have created a ‘service mindset’, we can serve within our dharma, and it will direct us to a meaningful life.

This book will definitely empower you in multiple ways, especially to create a journey filled with meaningful purposes and services. Jay has a superpower to help us discover our authentic potential so that we service the world with our gifts.

REFLECTION

  1. Do you feel as though you are truly fulfilling your authentic dharma?
  2. How do you think you can create a more ‘monk mindset’ for yourself?
