Book: Inner Engineering

Anju Sharma - Inner Engineering

As some of you may know, I studied engineering during my university days. Therefore, when I came across this book called 'Inner Engineering' by Sadhguru, I was intrigued to learn the engineering of the inner world.

The first half of the book focuses on the author's autobiographical journey. I always enjoy reading any personal experiences to understand where the author is coming from and how they contribute to the person he/she is today. From early childhood, Sadhguru had an inquisitive nature beyond the school books (he was not that interested in academics!). Due to Sadhguru's quest for spirituality, he spent a year travelling around India on a motorbike!

The second half of the book provides practical exercises for self-discovery and ultimate joy. They include meditation, diet, breathing, yoga and other ways of living. Since yoga has been a prominent aspect of my life, I like Sadhguru's definition of yoga: "The science of yoga, is quite simply the science of being in perfect alignment, in absolute harmony, in complete sync with existence." This sentence encapsulates the message that yoga is science that unites our inner consciousness to the pure consciousness as one, thus attaining ultimate peace.

One of its most powerful yet simple themes that resonated with me is to take responsibility for our life. As Sadhguru mentioned: "If you take responsibility, you feel empowered, because you are in control of your destiny. It is time to reclaim for ourselves the extraordinary transformative power of the single word: responsibility. Apply it to your life, and watch the magic unfold."

Through this transformation of self-discovery, we aim is to unshackle ourselves from the limited identity we have forged. As a result, we will live an authentic and pure self that is utterly blissful and infinitely responsible.
