Home

As we are staying more at home due to the pandemic, 'home' can have several meanings for some of us. A home can be much more than the physical structure or geographical location that we usually associate with. A home is a comfortable place where we can belong [1] and express our true selves. Therefore, a home can take various forms, such as the following.

  • Relationships: Certain relationships, such as family, friends or pets, provide us with feelings of authenticity and understanding. For example, conversations over dinner table with family or friends, or going for a long walk with the dog. We are at ease and content when we think about them or in their presence. Thus we can consider these relationships a safe haven.
  • Communities: Community is essential to our wellbeing as it gives us a strong sense of belonging. When we are accepted as a member of a community, we feel like we are cared for. There is a common thread in the community that helps us to connect with other members. Therefore, it is regarded as a home for many.
  • Passions: When we are passionate about something, such as a hobby, we are in a state of creativity. For example, when we are travelling, we create memories that we cherish for a long time and become a part of us. Due to this passion, we are joyous and peaceful because we are expressing our true selves.
  • Nature: When we are in nature, why do we feel happy and relaxed? Nature helps to reduce our stress levels by removing any discrimination or other judgment that stigmatize us. Also, nature embodies harmony and exudes calming energies where we feel truly safe to be in. We then remember our inner true self and that we belong to Earth, which is "a community of nature" [2].
  • Present Moment: Thich Nhat Hanh mentioned that: "Our true home is life, our true home is the present moment, whatever is happening right here and right now.” [3] When we are truly in the present moment and realize that our journey itself is a type of home, we will find a secure environment within ourselves, filled with stability and calm.

In order to build a home, we need to realize that it takes active effort. We need to provide this home with regular nurturing as much as it gives us. As well, it is also important to provide a 'home' for others by giving them kindness, compassion, and safety. With these feelings, others will sense an incredible welcome and belonging, thus resulting in greater wellbeing and happiness for everyone.
