Book: Hit Refresh

Anju Sharma - Hit Refresh

While I was walking around a local bookstore, Satya Nadella's 'Hit Refresh' caught my attention. I was intrigued by the 'behind-the-scenes' steps that this third CEO of Microsoft has taken for a massive transformation of a global corporation that is now worth over $1 trillion dollars.

At the time of his appointment as CEO, Satya recognized the need for renewal and rediscovery at Microsoft and took actions to improve its culture, partnerships, and technologies. In this process, Satya had demonstrated to be a leader searching for continual improvement for the organization, but more importantly for himself. As Satya shared anecdotes about his journey being the CEO, it was interesting to read how various life experiences had profound impacts on him. For example, while nurturing his son with special needs, Satya realized that he did not have the empathy required to build robust relationships and to deal with problems effectively. He then infused universal empathy as part of Microsoft's core culture. I am glad that Satya did this as I believe that empathy is something we definitely need to cultivate more prominently so that we have more kindness, trust and growth in every relationship.

As some may know, Satya's name means 'Truth'. Therefore, I appreciate he has shared the candid challenges and lessons in his book. I realized that it was definitely not easy for Satya to revamp Microsoft's downward situation back in the early 2000s. He inspired me that no matter how dire the obstacles are, if you have the right intentions and actions, you can overcome these obstacles.
