Habits of Geniuses
Recently I completed an amazing book called “The New Genius Formula” by Pamela Weintraub. Genius is no longer measured by an IQ test and seen as a 1-time birthright quality. Nowadays, genius is seen as a journey to greatness. We know that genius has multiple forms, such as emotional and social intelligence, We can enhance our brilliance through different ways, especially from habits. One of the chapters of this book explores the habits of genius people, such as Barack Obama, Bill Gates, Jane Austen. They are creatures of habit with high quality and consistency that separates them from the rest. These brilliant folks have figured out which practices supercharge their creativity and focus along with discipline. Here are 8 habits of the notable geniuses that you can apply into your journey.
- Wake Up Early: Many geniuses are committed to being early risers. For example, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour gets up around 6am daily for an hour of tennis. Early rising leads to high-level thinking and better productivity. People feel more in charge of their lives overall.
- Cultivate Daily Discipline: To increase your creative capacity, the brilliant people will perform an activity that adds predictable structure to their day, such as walking a dog or journaling. When they follow a daily routine, it will start to prime the brain, which leads to better creativity afterwards.
- Exercise to Exhaustion: For centuries, the world’s visionaries seemed to intuitively understand the brain’s benefits of exercise. Ben Franklin took a swim on the Thames river daily. Solid science emphasizes that moving well leads to thinking well. Exercise fuels the growth of the brain areas and limits any chronic inflammation in the body.
- Listen to Your Inner Voice: Each of the geniuses know that they have an inner voice or an inner instinct that they follow. For example, Oprah’s great success was more than a matter of talent - she listened to an inner belief in herself every step of the way.
- Do Work You Love: Special people, like Warren Buffet, are firm believers to pursue work that they love. They are always excited about their work and give their best to it.
- Create Your Own Space: To escape the distractions, innovative thinkers, such as Virginia Woolf, often carve a space to get work done. By creating this place, they can focus and ignite their creativity.
- Take Breaks: In today’s fast paced life, it is easy to get overwhelmingly busy with the ‘to-do’ list. However, great thinkers believe that they benefit from taking breaks such as walking away from their desk or observing out the window. During this break, the mind has the opportunity to have a ‘fresh look’ to make new ideas.
- Try Something New Regularly: It is important to regularly try something new, such as learning skill, listening to different viewpoints or trying another way of working. Richard Branson would venture into the unknowns that contributed to his successful companies. He said: “The day you stop learning is the day you stop living.”
Keep in mind that true success in life is dependent on a wide range of genius abilities. However, by establishing healthy habits light the path to extraordinary success.
