How FIFA Gave Me a New Part of Myself
If you had asked me a few months ago whether I was a sports fan, I would have smiled politely and said, "Not really." I have never considered myself athletic. You wouldn't find me analyzing game statistics, debating player transfers, or dreaming of scoring the winning goal in a championship match.
But life has a funny way of introducing you to new versions of yourself. This summer, Toronto became one of the host cities for the FIFA World Cup. With its Fan Festival located just across the street from my building, I decided to step into the experience. What started as simple curiosity quickly turned into genuine excitement. And something extraordinary happened over the course of the month.
I participated in the Portugal parade with a sea of red and green, waving flags and celebrating with contagious joy. Their passion wasn't just about soccer—it was about culture, community, and belonging. And seeing the Portugal bus with the legendary Ronaldo in person was a bonus!
I wandered through the mini soccer memorabilia museum at STACKT Market, where decades of soccer history came alive through jerseys, and iconic photographs. I spent countless evenings at the FIFA Fan Festival with friends, cheering alongside thousands of strangers who somehow felt like teammates for 90 unforgettable minutes. I even found myself at Harbourfront, laughing while trying different soccer-themed games and embracing the playful spirit that surrounded the city.
Somewhere along the way, something changed. Without realizing it, I became a soccer fan. Not because I suddenly understood every rule or could name every player. But because I fell in love with what sports represent. It reminds us what human beings are capable of when discipline meets passion. Behind every spectacular goal are thousands of hours of practice that nobody applauds. Behind every win are setbacks, injuries, failures, sacrifices, and relentless determination.
Athletes dedicate their lives to becoming just a little bit better every single day. That is something worth celebrating, whether you are playing badminton, writing a book, building a business, or simply trying to become a better version of yourself.
I have always respected athletes. Now, I admire them on a much deeper level. Perhaps the biggest surprise wasn't discovering soccer. It was discovering me. A version of myself that loves the electric energy of a crowd. A version that enjoys chanting with a sports community. A version that celebrates teamwork, resilience, and the simple joy of movement.
Will I become the female version of Jude Bellingham in this lifetime? Let's be realistic—definitely not! But I can sign up for a sport at my local recreation centre. I can support local teams. I can cheer louder. I can encourage the next generation of athletes. Most importantly, I can keep saying "yes" to experiences that stretch who I think I am.
Sometimes the greatest victories don't happen on the field. Sometimes they happen within us. Here's to discovering unexpected passions. Here's to athletes who inspire us through their dedication. And here's to sports for reminding us that it is never too late to join the game.
Cheers to sports! ⚽❤️
