Empowering Girls!

Anju Sharma - Empowering Girls

I was going through my photo gallery and came across a picture of me at the Yogathon held at Dundas Square in August 2016. It was one of the best mornings of my life since it incorporates my favorite activities:

  • Dancing to Bollywood music
  • Practicing 108 sun salutations
  • Helping to empower girls through their education in India

In many nations around the world, girls are facing numerous barriers to obtaining minimum education, while others are fighting to be in school. Some of these barriers include too high cost of education, traditional gender expectations for household responsibilities, misbehavior/violence towards girls, and more. There are girls, such Malala, who are fighting for girls' right to be educated. They are leveraging their voices and standing strong in the face of adversity. This is very inspirational for me since it requires internal strength for these girls to know clearly that they deserve only the best in life and to try their ultimate best to get it. They know that education is one method for them to be confident about themselves and to empower them to live the best life possible.

I am very blessed to have been encouraged by my parents to complete my education and to pursue a higher one. And I am aware that not every girl has the same opportunity as me, and I want to help out with the best intentions to support girl's empowerment through education. I am glad that Yogathon has provided one opportunity to help, and I look forward to other ones in the near future.
